CNY CyberVillage: Mohawk Valley

CNY CyberVillage - Mohawk Valley Edition - - Your New CNY Home Base.

Have you heard about the USA? Apparently the majority of them have been fat slobs for a good while now. It's true, guys, we're fat. As great a country we are, that's just the facts. Which is really sad, to me, because it's possibly one of the most controllable problems anyone could have. I'm not saying losing weight is easy, but compared to disease and famine, we've got it easy.

What are some possible solutions to the obesity crisis? Well maybe we could exercise more, but how do you enforce that to the public without being overly militaristic and quite frankly the idea of a cop saying "Hey! You're not exercising." just scares me. So how many other options are there than to monitor food in schools and pray to whatever we pray to that parents learn to throw away the snacks? Well, what this giant introduction has been leading up to, is the idea of filtering out the fatty, crappy foods that schools have and introduce salads, grilled chicken, and maybe take the 3rd layer of sugar off the top of the sandwiches (at least). Organizations are spending thousands of dollars to promote healthy foods. Well recently, PCRM put up some posters promoting healthy foods in schools.

The White House contacted the organization (PCRM) and requested they take it down. And they did! The posters they spent $20,000 printing and putting up around Union Station just got taken down.

"They're very nice people. I like them a lot," Barnard says. "But they called and said: Please take those down, you can't mention the kids and so forth. . . . They felt that mentioning the president's children was off-limits. They said [they're] not going to allow the use of their daughters as leverage."

They felt it was off-limits? Is it off-limits, do you think? None of the little Obama's names were given, and neither is displayed. And the poster would've really helped get the point across, I think. The girl in the poster is a vegetarian, who goes to a school with zero vegetarian options. Kids across the nation are forced to either eat crap or eat nothing. I guess they could bring bagged lunches, but none of the parents are taking it into their own hands, so how are we gonna lose weight?

My questions I want you to answer are;
1. Can you think of any ways for the government to help the country lose weight, besides replacing unhealthy foods?
2. Would you take the poster down if it was you who put it up? And what do you think would happen if you didn't?
And...
3. What will this country become if we do nothing about our nutrition?

Obviously, nutrition isn't the biggest thing on America's mind right now, but maybe it should be. Doesn't everything, in the end, come down to how we're living as people? If there's nobody alive to worry about health care, what's the point?

Be proactive and don't eat fatty, sugary food...if the kids gets smart the food places will follow you anywhere..you have the power..just say no!...eat oatmeal in the morning and carry a lunch..be a leader not a follower..you are what you eat!....I'm 58 years old and have been thin all my life but the fat I ate went to my arteries and they are getting clogged ...the ones in my neck! so its everyone's problem not just the over weight people

I am now paying the consequences of years of neglecting my health and diet. I need to lose weight due to heart problems and damage to my knees and legs. They sent me to a nutrition consultant. As I listened to her advice, I remembered the same advice in my youth from my grandmother; fruit, vegetables, cereals, avoid excessive fat fried, and exercise. I did good as a youngster; but as I got to be an adult, I fell victim to lack of time in the rat race. It was quicker to gobble down a greasy burger and fries with a high sugar soda than take time to plan a meal. If the kids of today start their life with the dietary disregard I had in my adult life, they are going to have serious medical problems by age 35.

However, I can not dictate to others how they eat while I correct my habits. This is a choice they must make for themselves. The government can continue to lecture about the dangers of unhealthy eating, but they can not effectively force you to make healthy choices, nor should they.

The Obama family has the right to control the use of their name and their kids' names in promoting any policy or product. Even though the kids are not directly named, we all know who is being referred to. How would you feel if someone printed and distributed posters of you as an overweight adult, and advised people to watch what they eat or they could end up looking like (insert name here). You would object, and would take action if the poster was not removed.

If we, as a people, continue to neglect proper nutrition; we will see a decline in the quality of life. There will be more illness, heart disease, circulation problems. Medical costs will continue to rise eating away at our standard of living. Obesity also deters proper exercise leading to further health problems. We will become a nation of overweight slobs sliding from one personal health crisis to another.

As I mentioned, I am trying to correct my ways through diet changes. In addition, I am hoping that leg surgery next month and repair of a hernia caused by my fat belly will allow me to get back to walking for exercise. Yet, sometimes I slip; I indulge in a scoop of ice cream on a hot day, I exceed my daily allowance, or some other diet crime. Should I face a government penalty for my slip-ups? No, Nature will take the toll on my body directly.
