Movie Reviews by the People for the People: Avatar

WOW! This was an awesome movie! But I had to remove the 3D glasses a few times since the realistic 3D effects made me a bit dizzy at times. The only complaint I could see about this movie is that it was long. BUT, it didn't seem too long like most nearly 3 hour movies.

The CGI, 3D/effects were amazing in this movie. The story line was very solid and I was even impressed how the writers didn't try to turn it into a political statement. There was a definite opportunity to do that with the military perspective, but they didn't. Great movie!

All Avatar reviews have been great and the movie has set well-deserved box office records. It is THE film of our age.

I'd have to say that the special effects are as remarkable for us as they were to the fans of the Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind in 1939. James Cameron, the writer-producer-director (magician) poured several years of his life into this film and that shows up in its length. The 3 hours didn't bother me (once we got past the other previews) because the movie was so engrossing.

The 3D glasses fit comfortably and I occasionally removed them just to see the difference without them. I had read that Cameron developed a special camera to film in 3D, but the glasses definitely takes the viewer into another dimension. I have heard that an IMAX theater gives the film an even greater presentation.

Rob, I disagree with you that there wasn't any political statement in the movie. I read the reviews beforehand and expected the messages that were mildly anti-war and strongly pro-environmental/"green" (or should that be blue?)

However, the political message seemed less anti-war than a history lesson in anti-colonialism. I was reminded of Dances With Wolves in which the main character turns his back on his own people in order to "save" the natives. That movie was original, too, in that it relied considerably on the language of the people. Avatar was intriguing on many levels. And thanks to a PhD who invented the language (see the credits at the end of the movie), the Na'vi people are mysterious, yet sympathetic.

This has to be the best film of 2009/2010 and I think it will stand the test of history.
