TROY, N.Y. – Junior Paul Cerone scored on a hard shot from the slot 2:23 into overtime – his fourth goal of the game – to give the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s lacrosse team an 11-10 come-from-behind win over Elmira College in a non-league game at Harkness Field. Rensselaer controlled the ball off the opening draw of the extra period and got two shots off before Cerone’s (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) game-winning marker. RPI, which forced overtime by scoring with just seven seconds left in regulation, improves to 2-3 on the season. The Soaring Eagles fall to 1-4.

Trailing 10-9 with 19 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, the homestanding Red Hawks saw senior Josh Secora (Evergreen, CO/Golden) hit the cross bar on a bouncing shot. Elmira controlled the rebound but the whistle blew as the visitors were called for two unnecessary roughness penalties and RPI retained the ball with 13 seconds left. Rensselaer set up its offense and got the game-tying goal six seconds later when Conor Chocheles (Babylon, NY/Babylon) found a cutting Brett Evans (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford), who scored from close range.

The game was close throughout as neither team opened a lead larger than two goals and there were six ties. Cerone opened the scoring at 9:59 of the first quarter before Evans doubled RPI’s lead just over a minute later. Elmira scored the next three goals, including a man-up goal by freshman Brandon Youngstrom (Vestal, NY/Vestal) for a 3-2 lead at 11:49 of the second quarter. Full Story
