Critical Questions to Ask Your Potential ESP (Email Service Provider).
The fact is, like anything, if you have, or can acquire, a budget to secure your own IP address to send emails to customers, then that is what you should do. When you use third party email service providers you risk having a third party, of whom you were not aware you were sharing your online identity, damage your email reputation. There is usually a fee to set up an individual IP address which, IF all necessary Sender Protocols are included, will run around $5,000 per IP address. This is a one-time investment in your brand name. If the quote is much less than that, then you might not be getting a quote for all sender identification protocols.
If you can-not afford to set up your own sender IP address, then you must ask your email service provider prospects the following mission critical questions prior to choosing one:
1) Am I sharing an IP address and, if so, with whom, and how many other email senders?
2) Can you tell me the IP address I will be using? Look up for yourself the sender IP reputation and who else is using the same IP address.

4) Do you remove and report on bounced emails? If not, how do I know to contact these people and get a new address? How can I clean my list? Are my stats accurate?
5) Are things like surveys included in the rate you are quoting me?
6) Can I track opens and clicks to the individual email recipient and generate an exportable report with those names?
7) Can I later upgrade my service to use my own web-based database, SQL, or other ODBC databases?
8) Can I later upgrade to my own individual server and IP address through your system?
9) Have all your email templates been tested? Were they tested in AOL, HotMail, Live, Gmail and YAHOO?
